Argumentative Writing
KSU's English 1101 is a Core IMPACTS course in the Writing area. Core IMPACTS refers to the core curriculum, which provides students with essential knowledge in foundational academic areas. This course will help master course content, and support students’ broad academic and career goals.
Specific Learning Outcomes for My Course
Scholar and author bell hooks writes, “The engaged voice must never be fixed and absolute but always changing, always evolving in dialogue with a world beyond itself.” This principle of engaging in dialogue will guide our work in English 1101 as we practice joining a larger conversation and asserting our own voices and stances.
Tell an engaging personal narrative that demonstrates a lesson you learned about rhetorical context
Identify and explain pathos, ethos, logos, and kairos.
Respond to another argument using rhetorical appeals.
Find and incorporate secondary sources to support an argument.
Reflect on your writing processes and foreshadow how you will use them in the future.
English 1102: Composition II
Research-Based Writing
English 1102 focuses on developing writing skills beyond the levels of proficiency required by ENGL 1101. Emphasizes interpretation and evaluation and advanced research methods.
In this course, our main goal is to introduce best practices in research methods and researched writing, and our secondary goal is to learn key skills that will help in your academic and professional careers. The course overall focuses on best practices in research, but does so while also developing the following skills:
Document & file sharing and management via the Microsoft Office suite
Collaborative writing & presenting
Team conflict resolution and mediation
Navigating diverse work and communication styles
Professional communication
