Dissertation: Identifying Prior Knowledge of Rhetorical Strategies in College Freshmen’s Social Media Use: A Survey of English 101 Students
An exploration of whether incoming freshmen demonstrate tacit knowledge of rhetorical strategies such as audience awareness, genre conventions, and persuasive tactics through their description of their social media usage. A survey was conducted that asked student respondents to describe the ways they use social media, then used thematic discourse analysis to identify words and phrases indicative of rhetorical strategies. The results provide avenues for future research into potential knowledge transfer from students’ social media writing to their academic writing.

Thesis: Teaching Developmental Writing Online: Necessary, But Not an Evil
